On July 14, 2019 CBB members toured two Mid Century homes in the North Shore suburbs.
The first, a stacked stone ranch in Glencoe by suburban architect, Milton Schwartz. The one owner home has been well maintained showing rich walnut walls and marble floors. The entrance was bordered by a custom designed screen of glass original to the home. Light filled the living room from the clerestory windows above. Complete with sliding panels between the dining room and kitchen and again, between the kitchen and family room made this time capsule fun for entertaining. The sunken living room provided seating around the stone fireplace. We thank realtor Jacquie Lewis for coordinating this visit.
The second part of our day was spent at the Tony Grunsfeld designed home of Liora and Jerry Mizel in Northfield. Sponsored by realtors Nancy Nugent and Jeannie Moysey, this steel and glass home is truly Palms Springs in the Midwest. The dramatic yet minimal decor provided the perfect ambience and framework for the impeccable landscaped pool and surrounding yard. I know I had to stop in my tracks just to take in the view. The owners were very gracious hosts, giving our members a private tour and entertaining us for several hours. The group gathered in the casita for a Q&A where it became very apparent that this glorious home has retained its integrity due the commitment from the Misels to make no changes to the design, footprint or structure. Their hope is to find a buyer for this home that will continue to honor that promise. I’m not sure when the tour ended because many of our members lingered by the pool enjoying conversation with Liora and Jerry. Perhaps some of us are still there…
